Gardens with rivers flowing beneath.
That’s what Nam Lai Tai Suan means in the Thai language.
That’s also how the Holy Qur’an describes heaven.
We moved out here to the hills in Bentong, Pahang in 2004,
having tired of the life in KL, after having viewed some 40 plots of land throughout the country.
We originally started out with just 2 fish ponds for our own consumption and for friends who came over to stay on the weekends.
We planted a mixture of fruit trees on the terraced slopes and started a vegetable plot for ourselves.
Most friends were surprised to find that the fish did not have a muddy smell . That’s because, unlike most other fresh water fish farms, our ponds have constant running water. And because the water comes from up in the hills and is cold, the fish are slower growing, leading to firmer flesh when they reach edible size.
As for the fruits and vegetables, nothing beats eating them as early as possible after they are picked.
Actually, nothing beats waking up in the early morning, taking in the morning air with a cup of hot coffee, then heading out to the farm to pick your fruit and vegetables for the day, catch a fish or two, start a fire and cook your own meal.
Friends suggested that we should share this bounty of nature with others.
We thought so too.
Fruit & Vegetables
Our durians are the ‘kampong variety and usually fruit twice a year.
The Sarawak pineapples are generally available throughout the year.
Pisang mas, pisang berangan and pisang rastali, too, are available throughout the year.
As are the papaya.
We also have, from time to time, dragon fruit, ciku madu, kedondong, rambutan, mangosteen, jambu madu, dokong, passion fruit and star fruit,
We also plant a variety of vegetables.
Additionally, we also make available produce collected from the forest by our Orang Asli neighbours, such as pucuk paku and tapioca.
All our fruits and vegetables are organically grown.
Fresh Water Fish
We now have 13 ponds, 4 concrete and 9 poly-lined, all constant flowing water, filled directly from clear hill water so that the fish never develop a muddy smell.
Fish are fed with our own processed feed, made from fishmeal, soyameal and tapioca flour. As we use no preservatives, a fresh batch of feed is processed every week.
We presently rear and sell Red Talapia, Baung ( Pak Soh Kong ), Jelawat, Patin and Keli ( Catfish ).

kyora,
Yes, it’s been mentioned to me before.
Something to think about
I agree with kyora. It would be a treat to visit your farm and to buy the fish, fruits and vegetables. Saves you to trip to my house 🙂
Alice,
Not exactly a visit to the nearby market!
Nice one Haris! Wd love to drop by if i’m in d area
Wonderful!
The family was just at Bentong to attend a wedding over the weekend. Wish we knew about this before today. Would have loved to visit.
What a lovely place, bro! You are blessed. How do you go home on the nights when you’re out in KL bashing BN till late?
TC,
A question I’ve asked many times myself.
Will tell you when I see you next.
When are we next holding the fort together?
Don’t you dare give away this place….I have been there and its Shangrila.
Is another invite on your thought process?
Doable
Haris
Thanks for the ‘tour’. Have always enjoyed your talapia which I cook Tom Yum with and keli is used for Phad Phet. Yep! Haadyai is my original kampung. And are we expecting durians anytime soon?
Susan,
Thanks for your support.
You’ll be the first to know when we’ve got durians.
Agree with Zorro, don’t ever give up this place.
Don’t forget me when the next invite to visit is scheduled.
Wish I could own something like this. Sigh!
